The weekend will kick-off at Madidi, with a silent auction and screening of "From These Roots" - a documentary by acclaimed filmmaker William Greaves on the history of the Harlem Renaissance that has won 22 international film festival awards. Friday, February 8
• 7:00 pm - "The Harlem Renaissance and Beyond" - Mississippi Museum of Art , Jackson
The Mississippi Museum of Art and the SonEdna Foundation proudly present an evening of learning about and celebrating the Harlem Renaissance, in conjunction with the exhibition Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series: Selections from the Phillips Collection. The program explores the cultural revolution that occured in Harlem in the 1920s and 30s, the legacy of which continues to impact creative genres to this day. The evening features poetry by Quraysh Ali Lansana , big band music of the era by "The Sessions", swing dance, and visual art - woven together in a theatrical presentation. Saturday, February 9
• 3:00 pm - "From the Harlem Renaissance to Hip Hop" - Charleston Arts Center
Writers of national repute will lead this writing workshop for students 6th grade and up. The workshop will begin with an in-depth review of the literature of the Harlem Renaissance era, and how it has influenced creative genres today. Following that, the writers will work hands-on with students to help create and shape their personal compositions. RSVP by calling 662.647.2827.
• 7:00 pm - "The Harlem Renaissance and Beyond" - Morgan Freeman Auditorium, Charleston High School
This evening will feature a repeat performance of "The Harlem Renaissance and Beyond". This will be an evening of enlightenment for those who missed the Friday event, or enjoyed it so much they want second helpings! A special feature will be the exhibition of works by Harlem Renaissance artists, from the collection of Morgan Freeman and Myrna Colley-Lee. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the door.
